In and Around Victoria #35 – Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be held May 4, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm in DeLeon Plaza in downtown Victoria.  Come down to the Plaza to enjoy live music, food, crafts, folklorico dancers, and a kids play area.  The Minority Business Council of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce brings you the Cinco de Mayo Celebration. Admission is free.

In and Around Victoria #33 – Historical Walking or Driving Tour

tourHistoric Victoria offers many fine old homes and buildings and there is a driving tour that features over 80 properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the homes and buildings have also been awarded Texas Historical Landmarks. You can follow the tour using your mobile device! There’s also a driving tour brochure available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 3404 N Ben Wilson. Check out Victoria in Motion (page 16) and try and identify the 17 pictures taken on the tour. If your name is drawn you’ll win lots of free stuff!

Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the state and its nickname “South Texas Crossroads” comes from its location almost equidistant from San Antonio, Houston and Austin. You’ll find over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places with some homes dating to pre-Civil War era. Amenities include two hospitals, great public school system along with highly rated private schools. You’ll enjoy shopping, great restaurants, festivals, parks and cultural attractions. Victoria also offers higher education options with Victoria College, University of Houston-Victoria and Texas Vocational School. Business is booming in Victoria and the surrounding areas! Come visit and stay awhile.

The Texas Zoo located in Riverside Park is small, but a real treat! There’s plenty of parking, a nice gift shop, concessions, aviary, small petting zoo, roaming peacocks, and many wild and beautiful animals to observe. Visit and explore all the Zoo has to offer! The Quilt Guild’s annual quilt show – Quilt Show – Threads in Bloom - is this Friday and Saturday, March 22 & 23. Stop by Holy Family Catholic Church and enjoy all the beautiful quilts, vendors, demos, and tea room! The show is Friday 10AM-5PM and Saturday 10AM-4PM. Location: 704 Mallette Drive off NE Loop 463.

The Memorial Rose Garden, opened in 1980, presents a gazebo surrounded by circle beds of over 100 varieties of roses and 1,300 rose bushes. Stop by to leisurely stroll among the bushes and enjoy the lovely fragrance from the roses. What a perfect way to spend the first day of spring!

The 2013 Home Product Show is this next weekend March 23 and 24 at the Victoria Community Center. The show starts Saturday, March 23 and runs from 10 AM-5 Pm and again on Sunday from 12 PM-5 PM. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students. Check out the list of vendors. You’ll find more information at the Builder Association of Victoria website.
