Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be held May 4, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm in DeLeon Plaza in downtown Victoria. Come down to the Plaza to enjoy live music, food, crafts, folklorico dancers, and a kids play area. The Minority Business Council of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce brings you the Cinco de Mayo Celebration. Admission is free.

The Victoria Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Newcomers Social on Thursday, May 9 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM. The event will be held at The PumpHouse Restaurant and Bar. Historic Victoria offers many fine old homes and buildings and there is a driving tour that features over 80 properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the homes and buildings have also been awarded Texas Historical Landmarks. You can follow the tour using your mobile device! There’s also a driving tour brochure available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 3404 N Ben Wilson. Check out Victoria in Motion (page 16) and try and identify the 17 pictures taken on the tour. If your name is drawn you’ll win lots of free stuff!

The home warranty provides repair and replacement coverage for most of your home’s appliances and systems such as electrical and plumbing. Now that you own your home and have a home warranty don’t forget to use it! You can check online to see what’s covered if you have any problems. We’ve talked to several new home owners lately and they called a repair person before calling the home warranty company. Always call the home warranty company first to see if the problem is covered.

Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the state and its nickname “South Texas Crossroads” comes from its location almost equidistant from San Antonio, Houston and Austin. You’ll find over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places with some homes dating to pre-Civil War era. Amenities include two hospitals, great public school system along with highly rated private schools. You’ll enjoy shopping, great restaurants, festivals, parks and cultural attractions. Victoria also offers higher education options with Victoria College, University of Houston-Victoria and Texas Vocational School. Business is booming in Victoria and the surrounding areas! Is my house in the floodplain?

FEMA has maps for you to check if your property is in a floodplain. Follow the link to City of Victoria Development Services.

Some properties that were in the floodplain have been removed due to the work by the Lone Tree Creek Channel Improvement that was completed in 2009. Use the maps as a guide but you will want to check with the City of Victoria to verify if your property is in the floodplain and requires flood insurance.

Toms Shoes

I’m sending this Shout Out to Toms because of their One for One program and because their shoes are SO comfortable. I decided to try a pair a couple of months ago and I honestly thought my feet would hurt by the end of the day, but I was wrong! I can show houses all day long wearing my Toms and my feet don’t hurt at all. Now my biggest problem is what pair should I order (there are so many cute choices) and how many pairs should I really own?! All I can say is try a pair….I think you’ll like them!
